The UK #1s in early 1990s, via Popular

Writing and talking about #1s of the past is hardly a new thing. Tom Ewing at his venerable blog Popular has gotten through decades worth of UK #1s, and it’s one of those rare blogs where the commenters are just as worth reading as the main post. Here’s his posts on the songs at the top of the charts in the UK in early 1990:

New Kids On The Block - ‘Hanging Tough’ (UK: #1 on 13th Jan; AU: #8 on 9 Nov 1989)

Kylie Minogue - ‘Tears On My Pillow’ (UK: #1 on 27th Jan; AU: #20 on 25th Feb)

Sinead O’Connor - ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ (UK: #1 on 3rd Feb; AU: #1 on 25th Feb)

Beats International feat. Lindy Layton - ‘Dub Be Good To Me’  (UK: #1 on 3rd Feb; AU: #12 on 22th July)

Snap! - ‘The Power(UK: #1 on 31st March; AU: #13 on 12th Aug)

Madonna - ‘Vogue’ (UK: #1 on 12th April, AU: #1 on 6th May)

Odd that Australia got New Kids on The Block before the UK - otherwise, Australia seems to be a few months behind when it comes to dance pop, and about a month behind on straight pop.
